How to Find Mold in Your Margate Home

Do you suspect there is mold in your Margate home or business? Often the first hint that a mold colony exists is the "moldy" smell that it gives off. If you have that scent in your home, or you have family members coming down with allergy symptoms it's time to ferret out the mold colony and restore your Margate home to its original condition.

So where do you start looking? While the odor is an indicator, unless it's localized in an enclosed area like a cabinet under a sink or a closet, the scent can float around not allowing you to pinpoint the source. Mold needs moisture to thrive so here are a few places to start looking:

  • Air conditioning drip pans
  • Dehumidifier drip pans
  • Under the clothes washer and dish washer
  • At the base of the water heater
  • Under sinks
  • Stains in the wall or ceiling
  • Baseboards

All of these places are subject to moisture and if there is a leak you can almost be assured a mold colony will form. Mold comes in a variety of colors so use a flashlight to help you spot colonies that blend in on the surface.

Mold Removal and Surface Restoration

If you are going to try to remove the mold yourself you will want to look up the EPA's guidelines before tackling the job. Getting rid of mold can be tricky and if you are not careful you can actually spread the mold in the process of trying to clean it.

If the mold is extensive you may want to consider calling a mold removal expert (like All Florida) who will not only get rid of the mold but restore the surface it was growing on. In some cases this will mean removing the surface (wallboard, baseboards, cabinets etc.) so you will want to ensure the company has experience in remodeling repairs.

Florida, with its hot and humid climate is "home base" for thousands of species of mold. It's a constant threat to Margate homeowners. The takeaway is if you see water or water stains where they don't belong then you need to make a conscious effort to find the source and fix it before mold spores have a chance to colonize.
